Kidney stones (medically known as renal lithiasis) are small, hard deposits (comprised of mineral and salt acids) that form inside your kidneys. Although kidney stones can be caused by any of a number of factors, a common scenario is that kidney stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together.

The remedy for passing kidney stones may be as simple as waiting for them to pass. Kidney stones, hard masses composed of small crystals, usually are first detected after they become painful. Kidney stone pain, felt in the belly, side of the back, groin or testicles, can be excruciating. Though stones may pass on their own spontaneously, natural treatment at home might help them along.

If you have kidney stones, it is very important to determine what type of stone you have to ensure the most successful treatment you can use.

The most common type of kidney stone is calcium based. These make up eighty percent of kidney stone cases in the United States. They are formed when calcium combines with oxalate. Oxalate can be found in everyday foods such as spinach, peanuts, and beets. A low-oxalate diet is recommended for anyone that has a history of calcium based kidney stones. It has also been suggested that taking calcium supplements can trigger these types of stones as well. There are many other types of kidney stones, but the three that comprise most of the remaining twenty percent of cases are; cystine, struvite, and uric acid stones.
