Diabetes – a metabolic disease where the person’s glucose (sugar) level remains higher than the normal. Nowadays, millions of people are found to be suffering from Type 2 diabetes. It is a condition where your body has inadequate insulin production or does not use insulin properly.
However, good news is that, as per the new study conducted at Newcastle University in England, Type 2 diabetes can actually be reversed by just losing your weight.
Roy Taylor, a professor of medicine and metabolism as well as the lead investigator at the university, made his 30 participants eat healthy low-calorie diet. He ensured that they only had 600 to 700 calories per day for eight weeks. This made the participants lose approximately 31 pounds. However, this was necessary to be continued for six months. Then he inspected the effects of weight loss.
When the scientists examined the diabetes status of the participants, they were shocked to find that diabetes was reversed in 12 patients. It has to be noted that they had been suffering from type 2 diabetes less than a decade. With the aid of losing weight and eating healthy, they could keep the disease successfully at bay for six months.
Taylor said, “What we have shown is that it is possible to reverse your diabetes, even if you have had the condition for a long time, up to around 10 years. If you have had the diagnosis for longer than that, then don’t give up hope – a major improvement in blood sugar control is possible. The study also answered the question that people often ask me – if I lose the weight and keep the weight off, will I stay free of diabetes? The simple answer is yes!”
However, in his previous study published in 2011, Roy already showed that diabetes could be reversed by a very low-calorie diet but couldn’t confirm if the results will be stable.
Now, this recent study funded by National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR BRC) grant proved that type 2 diabetes is reversible with a loss of weight.
So keep up the spirit!
