The medical Establishment will roll-over about the ever changing facts about curing diabetes. It has deluded itself for decades, but new scientific research has changed the landscape. The promoted diet for preventing diabetes has been the low-fat diet. That diet failed to work — for anything:
* overweight and obesity soared as people fattened up like cattle in a pen
* diabetes rates climbed along with obesity — they’re usually coupled
* carbs became the nutritional darling of all the so-called “experts”
Yes, that’s right! It never was cholesterol and fat, it was always carbohydrates that were doing the damage in diabetes. Let the shouts go up, the screaming and gnashing of teeth begin. How was this missed? It’s because medicine works mostly by belief systems and not by facts.
Why did the Establishment believe that fat was bad? It’s a long, sad story, but it has a lot to do with bias and self-promotion in medicine and science. It felt that the fat you ate became the fat that damaged body tissues and then stored as fat. However, the facts of biochemistry tell another story — it’s actually carbs that the body converts to fat!
Do these new insights rock you? The public has been blind-sided because no one took the time to go to the medical library and do a little research. That would have shown that by 1950 the biochemists knew that the body converts carbohydrates to fat and the fat we eat does not become the fat in and on our bodies.
Starting during the early 2000’s explosion of interest in low-carb, young, unbiased researchers set up some very good experiments to study the diet. What was the outcome? The results disproved all the negative statements that had been made during the last four decades:
* body fat and body weight dropped faster in low-carbers than low-fat dieters
* sugar in the blood dropped whereas there was no change in the low-fat diet group
* fat levels in the blood dropped because of low-carb eating
* the low-fat diet could not hold its own against low-carb as it won hands down
Diabetics can improve health and cure diabetes by following a low-carb diet. Changes occur rapidly, in less than 12 hours, as the body switches fuels from burning sugar to burning fat. It no longer needs much sugar. This is a fact not understood by the medical Establishment.
Syndrome X, also known as Metabolic Syndrome, is a constellation of symptoms indicating serious disturbances in health:
* diseases of the heart and blood vessel system
* elevated blood pressure
Current research suggests that a carbohydrate-reduced diet may be the first and most effective choice for patients with Metabolic Syndrome and diabetes. If you are normal but suffer from these symptoms, then reducing carbohydrates is the only effective non-pharmacological choice.
Low-fat was never proven to be healthful and low-carb was shown to be a great health improver. Unfortunately, no one read this research completed during the last 50 years of the 20th century. Claims were just made about the dangers of eating diets higher in fat (although followers of the low-carb diet actually don’t eat more fat).
Eating carbs and fat together is a prescription for disaster yet this is the way most people eat — a balanced diet the “experts” call it. Wrong. Switch to low-carbohydrate but don’t follow either the Atkins’s diet or South Beach Diet. Atkins’s plan if full of flaws and South Beach isn’t even a low-carb diet.
